Brené with Chris Germer on the Near and Far Enemies of Fierce Compassion, Part 1 of 2
Unlocking Us with Brené Brown
Near Enemy of Common Humanity
The far enemy of common humanity is dehumanization or demonizing, while the near enemy is sameness, which seems good but is dangerous as it assumes everyone's experiences are the same. This assumption can be alienating, harmful, and disrespectful, especially when dealing with individuals with different experiences or who have been harmed by the majority. By assuming sameness, true common humanity is not honored, which involves a deep understanding and compassion for someone's suffering, leading to tangible relief. Therefore, sameness undermines the true essence of common humanity and can cause harm and injury.
