Interpreting Urinary Ketone Test Results

There are three ways to measure ketones: through urine strips, blood, and urine beta hydroxybutyrate kits. Urine ketone strips measure urine acetoacetate, while urine beta hydroxybutyrate kits measure beta hydroxybutyrate. The Abbott Labs Precision Xtra and KetoMojo are two devices that measure beta hydroxybutyrate. The urine ketone test can give a rough indication of blood ketone levels, with bright purple indicating a likely ketosis state. Normal hydration and urine acetoacetate levels of 40-80 mg/dL suggest ketosis, while levels of 15 mg/dL indicate a less likely ketosis state.
