Late Action, Soviet Overtones
The delay in announcing the decision not to contest the election and the way Vice President Harris was informed had distinct late Soviet characteristics. Unlike in 1968 when the decision was made early, here the announcement was delayed until the last moments and the president's invisibility raised concerns about the undemocratic nature of the process. The manner in which the decision was communicated, resembling a coronation of Vice President Harris well before the convention, reflects Soviet-style tactics and undermines the democratic process.
