Consider the costs and complexity associated with hiring new employees; from recruiting and onboarding costs to potential turnover. Hiring increases complexity exponentially due to the network effect. Managing a small team is easier due to reduced costs and complexity. Companies drowning in work need more breathing room, which can be achieved by either hiring more people, with its drawbacks, or expecting current staff to work harder, which may not be sustainable.
