NOTE

Understanding the Mechanisms of Amino Acids and Drugs in Organisms

Amino acids and drugs behave uniquely when given to organisms. There has been debate that amino acids don't enter cells easily, while drugs struggle to penetrate cells due to their complex structure. Neurons can take up drugs, but other cells must break them down and then reabsorb them. A recent discovery by a research team at WashU found a specific transporter, SLC12A8, that facilitates the entry of amino acids into cells. Although further research is needed, understanding these mechanisms is crucial for effective administration of compounds in both animals and humans.
