Living Well with Dementia
Dementia is a clinical syndrome characterized by memory and thinking impairments, affecting a significant portion of older adults. As people live longer, the prevalence of dementia is expected to increase, with an estimated 139 million cases worldwide by 2050. Dementia can reduce autonomy, social engagement, and lead to feelings of shame. It also impacts the quality of life for care partners. Despite the challenges, it is possible to live well with dementia, emphasizing the importance of recognizing individuals with dementia as whole people. The memory and thinking impairments of dementia can hinder fulfilling psychological needs like finding meaning, setting goals, navigating daily life, engaging in activities, and connecting with others.
