Skin Cancer: Melanoma, BCCs, and SCCs
Melanoma, while the deadliest form of skin cancer, represents only 1-2% of all skin cancer cases, with the majority being basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). Public messaging often conflates the prevalence of skin cancer with its severity, leading to misconceptions that all skin cancers are both common and deadly. In reality, while skin cancer overall is common, only melanoma has a significant mortality rate. BCCs are primarily linked to chronic sun exposure, with more sun exposure leading to a higher incidence. In contrast, melanoma is more associated with intermittent sun exposure and is particularly prevalent among individuals with pale skin who experience sunburns, especially during childhood and adolescence, making early sunburns a significant risk factor for developing melanoma later in life.
