NOTE

The Problem of Induction and Recognizing Mutual Knowledge

The problem of induction arises from the challenge of generalizing from one's own experiences to understand the experiences of others, especially when individuals share similarities and differences. Despite our innumerable similarities and differences, we are able to extract and apply our common knowledge to understand each other. This shared mutual knowledge forms the basis of civilization and enables trust in interpersonal interactions. However, the advent of artificial agents like language learning models (LLMs) poses a significant challenge as they may lack this mutual knowledge, leading to the creation of counterfeit people. These counterfeit people, in the form of LLMs, are not inherently motivated by the best interests of the individual, and their immortality sets them apart from genuine human agents. Consequently, ensuring that artificial agents possess the necessary alignment with human values and intentions remains a critical challenge in the field of AI.
