Affective forecasting plays a significant role in our motivation towards actions that will benefit or harm our future self. We tend to be highly motivated to act in a way that will benefit our future self, similar to how we are motivated to act for the welfare of others. However, despite having the greatest influence and moral responsibility towards our future self whom we will ultimately inhabit, we often lack the same level of motivation and influence when making decisions for our own future selves compared to decisions made for others. This raises the question of why we struggle to prioritize our future selves despite having the most significant impact on their well-being.
