The end goal of a PM's career can fall into four or five buckets. The most common path is becoming the head of product, taking on bigger scope at more consequential companies and solving the biggest problems. The second path is the general executive general manager type, where the individual is as passionate about building the product as they are about building the business. The third path is the founder journey, where individuals are more passionate about the creation of new and often start their own company. The fourth path is the investor archetype, where individuals become focused on the return from portfolio investments. Lastly, there is the option of becoming a semi-retired advisor, which is more of a later career stage. Each of these paths requires different career frameworks and skill sets.
Much of the career advice out there is for aspiring PMs. But what about those who have one foot on the ladder and are looking to climb the next rung? This episode is about advancing mid to late-stage product management careers. I'm joined by Peter Yang, Product Lead at Roblox, and product newsletter writer, to discuss how established PMs can avoid getting stuck.
