Avoidance Feeds Anxiety
Avoidance feeds anxiety, but graduated exposure can help overcome it. When we avoid something that triggers anxiety, it feels good in the moment but ultimately entrenches our fears. The solution is exposure therapy, gradually getting used to the trigger. Clinicians ask patients what they're avoiding and start with baby steps. Remember, physically being in a scary situation is better than avoiding it, even if it's scary.
