It is also important to signal your own issues or topics, but not to start the meeting with unloading your own topics. Instead, the meeting should start with open-ended questions and a focus on the direct report's needs. In addition to asking open-ended questions, it is important to pay attention to tone, body language, and allow the other person to talk more.
