NOTE

The Impact of Sleep on Health and Well-being

Adequate sleep of seven to nine hours is linked to better health outcomes, while getting less than seven hours can lead to serious health conditions like diabetes, depression, immune suppression, weight gain, and heart disease. Chronic sleep deprivation can increase the risk of dying from heart disease by around 20% and affect blood pressure, inflammation, and the immune system. Insufficient sleep can also impact mental health, increasing the risk of dementia in the long term and causing irritability and decreased cognitive function in the short term. Lack of sleep can lead to increased pain sensitivity, reduced sense of humor, and altered behavior like talking more, oversharing, and lacking a filter.
