The Role of Hippocampus in Learning and Education
The hippocampus plays an intermediate role between working memory and long term memory, allowing for quick but temporary learning. Information initially stored in the hippocampus can be quickly connected and learned but can also deteriorate rapidly, requiring repeated reinforcement to be retained in the long term memory. The current education system with its focus on covering the curriculum quickly may overlook the importance of giving students time to deeply engage with and understand the material, leading to ephemeral learning.
