Understanding Muscle Loss and Protein Intake During Dieting
A study on muscle loss during dieting found that the measurement devices used are not accurate in determining the type of muscle lost. New weightlifters can still gain muscle while in a calorie deficit. Another study showed that novice strength trainees in a calorie deficit gained muscle with a protein intake of 0.4-0.5 grams per pound of body weight per day. These findings provide reassurance for those planning to eat a low amount of protein for a short period of time.
