Dissociative identity disorder often leads to amnesia and misdiagnosis as schizophrenia due to the brain's delicate work in constructing the self. Studying patients with epilepsy, it was found that seizures starting in the anterior pre-cunius area caused depersonalization and dissociation, disrupting the network responsible for building a mental map of the physical self. A distinction is made between the 'I' as the agent behind actions and the 'me' as stored memories of the 'I.'
