Intrinsic Motivation and Framing Rewards

When rewards are offered for a task, it devalues the task in the eyes of the individual, making them think the task must not be enjoyable if a reward is needed. This is evident in how children, who have not been subjected to grading and ranking, display intrinsic motivation in pursuing their interests with enthusiasm and curiosity. They naturally seek to understand things without external incentives, unlike how adults tend to treat children, students, employees, and even themselves by using rewards as motivators.
