In ancient times, the synchronization of menstrual cycles among women living closely together was a survival mechanism to ensure multiple women were impregnated by the alpha male who might be away for extended periods. This ensured survival of the species in case of food shortages or other dangers. Although this mechanism is no longer necessary, the presence of sex steroid hormones like estrogen and progesterone in sweat still leads to the synchronization of menstrual cycles among women who spend time together, as these hormones leak and transfer between individuals.
