The Power and Peril of Intuition

Implicit learning is the basis of intuition, where we pick up on complex patterns without conscious effort. However, the peril lies in the fact that implicit learning doesn't distinguish between real causal patterns and correlational patterns, leading to biases. To address this, Hogarth suggests replicating how science distinguishes cause from correlation in situations of implicit learning. This involves clear feedback, information, and tightly coupled error. By following these conditions, implicit learning can track causal patterns. The flow state, characterized by clear information, tight coupling, and meaningful error, aligns with these conditions and is indicative of effective implicit learning.
