The Impact of Completing Challenges on Personality Growth
Successfully completing greater numbers of challenges predicted greater personality growth over time for most of the big five traits, suggesting that taking small consistent steps towards aligning behaviors with desired traits can produce trait growth. However, desiring trait change and making plans but not following through backfired, leading to decreases in trait levels over time. Additionally, declaring a goal may be construed as progress, undermining motivation to actually advance the goal.
