In the New World, American colonists enjoyed economic freedom and opportunity, unlike in Europe where social classes were rigid. However, slavery was deeply entrenched in the colonies. While Americans fought for their liberty against British restrictions, they also maintained a system of chattel slavery. Slavery in Europe had ceased since the fall of the Roman Empire.
