#297 Ben Ashdown & Dr Mustafa Sarkar - Exploring the Behavioural Indicators of Resilience

NOTE

Understanding Resilience Behaviors in Team Sports

Team sports demonstrate two crucial categories of resilience behaviors: verbal and non-verbal support. Coaches and sports practitioners should recognize the importance of both forms of support, with non-verbal cues often going unnoticed. Additionally, emotion-focused resilience behaviors are vital, particularly in a player's ability to regulate emotions during setbacks. Observational indicators of emotional control include positive body language, specific facial expressions, and how players respond after being substituted. Maintaining perspective and showing humor amidst challenges play significant roles in emotional resilience. Players may instinctively react negatively to undesirable situations, but they must quickly shift back to focus on the game. The ability to process emotions and reinvest in the game reflects emotional maturation, with potential age-related differences observed in emotional reactivity among players. Younger athletes may show greater emotional volatility compared to older, more emotionally mature players.
