#190 – Eric Schwitzgebel on whether the US is conscious

NOTE

Exploration of Consciousness Emergence and Evolutionary Analogies

There is no specific moment when consciousness 'winks on' during fetal development; rather, it appears to exist on a continuum. Like evolution of the eye, consciousness may have evolved from a state without any conscious properties to a tiny, minuscule form and progressively developed over time. Nature often presents borderline indeterminate cases where drawing a clear boundary is challenging. The analogy of evolving from a cell without the capacity to respond to light to having photoreceptor cells can be applied to the evolution of consciousness, starting from a state without consciousness-like properties to a gradually increasing level of consciousness.
