Mouse studies show that the common inbred mouse strains do not die from atherosclerosis, but instead develop a high tumor burden, with about 75-80% of them dying from cancer. This differs from humans, and raises the question of whether caloric restriction may be extending lifespan in mice by preventing cancer.
