Mary Ainsworth, a prominent researcher in attachment psychology, conducted research observing infants with their mothers to understand how they react in different situations. She observed the behavior of infants when in the presence of their mothers, in the presence of a stranger, and when their mothers left and returned. A key concept she introduced was the idea of proximity to a secure base, where infants seek reassurance and safety from their primary caregiver before exploring their surroundings.
