Limit Alcohol to Protect Cognitive Health

Adults with one or more copies of the APOE4 allele face significant cognitive decline risks from alcohol consumption. Data indicates a stark increase in risk: 90% for two or less drinks per day, 170% for two to five drinks, and a staggering 730% for five or more drinks daily. In contrast, some studies suggest light to moderate drinking may offer a protective effect against dementia for non-carriers of the APOE4 allele. However, APOE4 carriers do not benefit from such protective effects, leading to the conclusion that individuals with even a single copy of the APOE4 allele should minimize alcohol intake, ideally opting for no alcohol to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease or dementia.
