Through collaborative efforts, the government, fishing community, conservation organizations, and academia developed solutions to protect rockfish, resulting in its status change to a green light fish. Key practices for responsible seafood consumption include asking about the fishing method, preferring pole and line caught or US-farmed fish, disregarding price as an indicator of sustainability, and exploring a variety of fish species to find sustainable options.

Roughly 196 million tons of fish were harvested in 2020, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The organization also notes that the number of overfished stocks worldwide has tripled in the last century. All of this overfishing has led to the decline of entire species, like Atlantic cod.
