The theory of the adjacent possible or TAP explains that new things can be created by combining existing things. The number of things in the economy at a given time affects the potential for creating new things. For example, if there are 10 things, there are various combinations that can be made to create new things. This concept applies to any number of things, with more possibilities as the number increases.
