The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast

NOTE

**Motivation dies in hedonism **

The absence of a unifying narrative leads to multiple consequences. Without a higher order superordinate aim, positive motivation decreases, as it is tied to having a target to move forward. Destroying the ultimate aim eliminates the structure upon which reward itself is dependent, except for satiation induced rewards, which produce quiescence instead of forward movement. This results in the loss of positive emotion and the multiplication of negative emotion. Anxiety also increases with the multiplication of aims, as it is based on a calculation of the entropic distance to a given destination. Furthermore, scarcity and deprivation are linked to value, meaning that being overfed or surfited by a stimulus diminishes its value. This underlines the relationship between scarcity and the appreciation of resources.
