The Dr. Gabrielle Lyon Show
Focus on EPA and DHA content in Fish Oil Supplements
The main omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil supplements are EPA and DHA. The typical recommendation is to consume two oily fishes a week to get around a gram per week. For people with heart disease, the recommendation may start at around one gram per day. When choosing fish oil supplements, focus on the EPA and DHA content, as some supplements may have minimal amounts of these beneficial fatty acids. Look for supplements with around 30% EPA plus DHA content, expressed in milligrams per soft gel, to ensure you are getting the desired dosage.
