Is There a Cause of Atherosclerosis in Humans?

A research study observes similarities between heart transplant recipients and individuals with atherosclerosis, suggesting an immunologic reaction. The blood vessels of heart transplant recipients show signs of attack due to foreign cells, leading to inflammation. Cholesterol acts as a patch in response to this attack. The study proposes that lectins, foreign proteins binding to sugar molecules on blood vessels, could be the cause of atherosclerosis in humans. Removing lectins has shown to reduce markers for atherosclerosis.
