NOTE

Creating Stakes and Surprise in Storytelling

In storytelling, creating stakes involves introducing a significant event or situation at the beginning to make the audience worry and engage in the narrative. Strategies like planting an 'elephant' or a major event early on, sharing a plan or 'backpack' with the audience, dropping hints or 'breadcrumbs' about future events, and slowing down time with 'hour glasses' during pivotal moments all contribute to building stakes. Additionally, predicting a future, even if not entirely accurate, through 'crystal balls' can effectively heighten tension and suspense. On the other hand, surprise in storytelling is a powerful tool that occurs when the audience does not anticipate an event, yet it feels inevitable upon revelation. A well-executed surprise can captivate the audience and enhance their storytelling experience, offering a delightful and memorable moment. However, storytellers must be cautious not to ruin the impact of surprises by overusing them or making them predictable.
