NOTE

The Smart Phone Paradox

Users over the age of 18 are predicted to spend an average of 48 minutes per day on TikTok and 48.7 minutes on YouTube. Netflix remains the leader at 62 minutes. The amount of time people spend online has increased, resulting in a need to squeeze time from other activities. The discourse around mental health and other issues related to smartphone use should be seen as a hardware problem rather than a software problem. The optimism and agency associated with smartphones have decreased over time. The smartphone paradox is the choice between being a phone addict or a phoneless Luddite. The speaker proposes a solution by using two phones - a 'kale phone' with utilitarian apps and a 'cocaine phone' with entertainment apps. This approach allows for a controlled and balanced usage of smartphones.
