Understanding Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance is a critical issue that dates back to 1959 when the radio immunoassay was developed to measure insulin levels. Initially, researchers found higher insulin levels in type 2 diabetics' blood, leading to the discovery of resistance to a hormone. Insulin resistance occurs when insulin receptors on cells are downregulated, leading to dysfunctional signaling beyond the receptors.
