The Fall of the Empire in the West

The concept of dividing the world into secular and religious dimensions originated from Christians in the West. This idea has placed strains on non-Christian societies like India and Turkey. The story of Christ being asked about paying taxes to Caesar and his response of 'render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and render unto God what is God's' forms the foundation of this concept. Augustine, a key figure in the Latin church, further developed this idea after the fall of the Western Empire.
