Consciousness as a Correction System for Errors
Consciousness plays a crucial role in detecting errors in our actions and correcting them. When we make a mistake in a routine task that we have automatized, consciousness helps us become aware of the error, focus on it, and correct it by engaging specific brain areas. Through practice and correction, the brain builds specialized machinery to automate the corrected action, reducing the need for conscious intervention. The purpose of consciousness, as suggested by Whitehead, is to expand the range of tasks we can perform without conscious effort.
