The Studies Show
Comparing Effectiveness of CBT and Antidepressants
Studies show that the effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are comparable to those of antidepressants in the short term, but CBT is significantly more effective at six to 12 months. On the other hand, combined treatment of CBT and antidepressants is found to be more effective than pharmacotherapy alone in the short and longer term. However, the combined treatment is not more effective than CBT alone at either time point. Despite this evidence, it is essential to consider that the analysis only includes studies comparing CBT to antidepressants or their combination, and it does not account for a comprehensive range of antidepressant trials.
