The Neglected Middle Child of Mental Health

In the midst of the pandemic, our initial fear and grief gave way to a state of languish. Languishing is the space between depression and flourishing, where you lack well-being and optimal functioning. It dulls motivation, disrupts focus, and increases the likelihood of reducing work. Languishing may be more prevalent than depression and can increase the risk of mental illness. The term was coined by sociologist Corey Keys, who noticed that many people were neither depressed nor thriving.
