NOTE

The Impact of Antibiotics on Microbiome Development

Antibiotics can significantly disrupt the delicate ecosystem of the microbiome by killing off a wide range of bacteria. Following antibiotic treatment, the microbiome can gradually rebuild itself based on the food consumed and the environment. While some individuals may regain a similar microbiome to their original one, others may develop a different composition. Studies suggest that children exposed to antibiotics have a higher risk of conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, ADHD, and celiac disease. The microbiome variance before and after antibiotics during developmental years may play a crucial role in these health outcomes. Therefore, after antibiotic use, there is an opportunity to reset the microbiome through dietary improvements, as the microbiome starts afresh with a new composition.
