Importance of Developing Dispositions over Skills in Education
The focus should be on developing dispositions such as habits of mind and attitudes rather than just skills, as skills are something that can be done, while dispositions are something that are actually done. Training students in thinking skills only led to temporary retention as they did not come to mind when really needed. Therefore, using terminology like habits of mind and dispositions is preferred over the term 'skills' in education. Additionally, it is emphasized that language matters when discussing young people, and they should not be referred to as 'children' or 'kids'.
