Conducting effective customer interviews requires careful preparation and a strategic approach. Prioritize face-to-face interactions, whether through video calls or in-person meetings, as they yield deeper insights than written surveys. Build rapport with interviewees to foster trust and encourage them to share unique insights. Delay introducing your ideas until the conclusion or avoid them entirely to prevent biasing responses. Focus on being a listener rather than a speaker; employ open-ended follow-up questions to facilitate rich discussions about their experiences and challenges. If recording is not possible, take detailed notes during the conversation to capture essential information for later analysis.
YC often says "talk to your users", but actually doing that is surprisingly tricky. YC Group Partner Gustaf Alströmer gives non-obvious advice on how to talk to both current and potential users, how to run a great user interview, and how to interpret the feedback in these conversations.
