The gut bacteria of an obese individual can play a causal role in their obesity. Even when lean individuals receive fecal transplants from obese donors, their habits may not override the effects of the new bacteria due to the influence of the microbiome on food cravings and metabolism efficiency. Changes in the microbiome can lead to altered food cravings and predisposition to obesity, influencing behavior and preventing individuals from returning to their previous state.
