NOTE

Understanding the Science of Pain

Pain is a complex and subjective experience that is not directly linked to the physical stimulus. The sensation of pain begins with nociceptors in the body that detect various stimuli like temperature, pressure, and pH changes. These signals then travel up nerve fibers to the brain. It is in the brain where these signals converge with nerves to create the unique experience of pain. The biomedical model's idea of a direct one-to-one relationship between stimulus and pain experience is incorrect. Our individual experiences of pain are shaped by emotions, cognition, memory, and actions, creating a subjective experience of pain that differs from person to person. It's essential to understand this distinction to avoid projecting our own experiences onto others and to support individuals suffering from chronic pain, which is often unseen.
