The Immortality Project

Philosopher Ernest becker says the vast majority of people facing this terror of impermanence and insignificance respond by engaging in a protest against their insignificance. They set out on a hero's journey, he calls them cultural heroes, seeking out significance and permanence throughout their life. All along the way acting out what he calls an immortality project. This is a project where the goal is to make you immortal or at least a piece of yourself immortal.
