NOTE

Unpacking Resilience: The Role of Teammate Support in Sports

Resilience in sports is significantly influenced by teammate support behaviors, specifically during adverse situations or setbacks in games. Participants identified 40 behaviors categorized into seven themes, with a notable focus on supportive actions from teammates. These behaviors manifest through verbal encouragement and positive non-verbal cues, such as clapping or supportive body language directed at affected players. This contrasts with common reactions observed in competitive environments, where criticism prevails, highlighting a cultural challenge to fostering resilience. Participants indicated that the act of providing support can serve as a protective factor that enhances resilience, emphasizing the necessity of recognizing resilience as a positive adaptation to stress rather than merely an outcome of social support. Therefore, demonstrating resilience necessitates addressing specific stressors that trigger supportive responses among teammates.
