Episode 13 – The Distinction of Essence and Existence | Prof. Edward Feser
Aquinas 101 - Course 2: Introduction to Thomistic Philosophy
A Critic's Charge of Circularity Can Be Rebutted
A charge of circularity against an argument can be rebutted if we have independent reason to believe the premises. In this case, as Clema notes, if I know the essence of something, which is of a certain kind, then I will not know a priori whether any other thing of that kind, in fact, does exist, has existed, or will exist. The critic might respond at this point that this begs the question in supposing that even a full and complete knowledge of some things essence wouldn't yield knowledge of its existence. A point made earlier is also relevant to answering the critic's allegation of circularity.
