NOTE

The Economics of Winter Hay Feeding in Cow Calf Operations

The profitability of cow calf operations is inversely related to the number of days hay is fed in the winter across North America. The more days hay is fed, the less profitable the operation becomes. Continuously feeding hay for 120 to 150 days annually is not a profitable management practice. It is crucial to shift the mindset from traditional hay feeding practices to more cost-effective methods, as feeding hay for an extended period is an economic disaster for commercial cow calf production.
