There's a lot of research in experimental psychology where you give people puzzles, especially anagrams. They solve the problem and then ask them to reflect on what they regret doing or not doing. People often do better in the next round because they felt bad. That bad feeling is a signal to the brain saying, huh, maybe I should do things differently.
