NOTE

Understanding Compression and Tension in the Spine

The spine can experience both compression and tension simultaneously during activities such as deadlifting or yoga. A deadlifter experiences compressive pressure on the nucleus and posterior disc bulge due to bending forward under enormous load, while a yoga practitioner with a flexible spine experiences compression on the front of the disc when bending backward. The adaptation of the spine to specific activities, such as powerlifting or yoga, determines the type of disc bulge (posterior or anterior) that may occur. Therefore, it's crucial not to mix up the adaptation schedules and to tailor movements and loads according to the desired outcome for the spine.
