Health Risks of Long-Term PPI Use
Long-term use of proton pump inhibitor drugs has been associated with an increased risk of hip fracture, wrist fracture, and spine fracture. Despite being approved for short-term use, many individuals remain on these drugs for inappropriate reasons. Overuse has been exacerbated by the availability of PPIs over the counter, leading to challenges in stopping the medication due to withdrawal symptoms. PPIs have been linked to adverse effects such as pneumonia, intestinal infections, kidney failure, stomach cancer, cardiovascular disease, and even premature death.
